Looking for double glazing in Stamford, Peterborough, or anywhere across Lincolnshire and the East Midlands? Aperture Window Group has been installing energy-efficient double-glazed windows and doors across the region for more than 20 years. From Georgian townhouses on St Mary’s Hill to Victorian terraces in Peterborough and post-war semis in Bourne and Rutland, we’ve worked on just about every type of property the area has.

We’re a Stamford-based, family-run business. Every installation comes with a 10-year guarantee, A++ rated glazing as standard, and Assure-accredited workmanship.

Worth The Invest

How Does Double Glazing Work?

Double glazing uses two panes of glass separated by a sealed gap, usually filled with argon gas. That gap is the workhorse: it slows the movement of heat from the warm side of the glass to the cold side, keeping more warmth inside your home in winter and helping rooms stay cooler in summer.

Three things make modern double glazing far more effective than the single-pane windows still found in many older Stamford and Peterborough properties:

An insulating gas-filled cavity. Argon is denser than air, so heat moves through it more slowly. Less warmth escapes outward.

A Low-E coating. A near-invisible metallic layer on the inside of the outer pane reflects radiant heat back into the room.

Tight modern seals. Modern frames and gaskets eliminate the draughts and cold-bridge problems that plague older windows, which makes a real difference to comfort in rooms next to exterior walls.

Many Options

Types of Double Glazing We Install

Not all double glazing is built the same. The differences come down to the glass, the gas between the panes, and the frame.

A, A+ and A++ rated windows. Window energy ratings work like the labels on a fridge. A++ is the highest, with the lowest heat loss. We fit A++ rated units as standard, which lose around 30% less heat than the A-rated double glazing still found in many homes installed 10 to 20 years ago.

Low-E glass. Every double-glazed unit we install includes a Low-E coating as standard.

Argon-filled cavities. Argon is denser than air and slows heat transfer more effectively. Our standard units are argon-filled.

Toughened and laminated glass. Building regulations require safety glass in ground-floor windows, French doors, and any low-level or stairwell glazing. Laminated glass is also a good upgrade for security or noise reduction.

Acoustic glazing. If you live near a busy road, the East Coast Main Line through Peterborough, or the A1 around Stamford, acoustic-rated glass can cut traffic noise by up to 35 decibels.

Even More Options

Frame Options

The frame matters as much as the glass. We offer four:

uPVC. The most popular and cost-effective choice. Modern uPVC is far better engineered than the chunky white frames of the 1990s.

Timberlook PVC. A uPVC frame with a wood-grain finish, designed for Stamford’s conservation area and other character properties where the planning department wants the look of timber without the maintenance.

Aluminium. Slimmer sightlines, larger panes, and a more contemporary look. A strong fit for modern Peterborough new-builds, extensions, and bifold-door openings.

Hardwood. Traditional timber frames for listed buildings and properties where authenticity matters.

Rough Costs

What Does Double Glazing Cost in Stamford & Peterborough

Prices vary widely depending on the size of the property, the style of window (casement, sash, bay, French), the frame material, and the glass specification. As a rough guide based on jobs we’ve quoted across Stamford, Peterborough, and the surrounding area:

A single standard-sized uPVC casement window, fully fitted, starts at around £450 to £700. Larger windows and bay configurations cost more. A typical three-bedroom semi with eight to ten windows usually comes in between £4,500 and £7,500 for a full uPVC replacement. Aluminium frames are typically 30 to 60% higher. Hardwood and heritage sash windows cost more again because of the materials and additional fitting time.

These are guide figures, not quotes. For an accurate price we’ll visit the property, measure up, look at the existing windows, and give you a written quote with no obligation.

Double Glazing vs Triple Glazing

A question we get often, especially on new-builds and extensions. Triple glazing adds a third pane and a second gas-filled cavity, which improves both thermal and acoustic performance.

For most homes in Stamford and Peterborough, modern A++ rated double glazing is the better-value choice. The thermal improvement from triple over double is real but small, and usually only worth the extra cost if your home is already heavily insulated, if you live somewhere especially noisy, or if you’re building to Passivhaus standard. We’re happy to install either and to talk through whether the upgrade makes sense for your specific property.

Double Glazing for Period and Heritage Properties

Stamford has one of the largest conservation areas in England, with hundreds of Grade II listed buildings in the town centre. Peterborough has its own conservation areas around the cathedral precinct, Park Road, and parts of Werrington. Replacing windows in these properties isn’t the same as a standard installation.

Recent jobs we’ve worked on include:

-Listed Georgian townhouses in central Stamford where every window had to match the original profile and sightlines

-Conservation-area properties where the local authority specified frame colour, opening style, and glazing-bar configuration

-Sash window replacements using slim-sightline double-glazed units that keep the original look

-Stone-mullioned cottages around Rutland and the surrounding villages

In most cases planning permission isn’t required, but listed buildings and conservation areas usually need consent from South Kesteven District Council, Peterborough City Council, or Rutland County Council. We can advise on what’s needed and help with the application.

added benefits

Security as Standard

Modern double glazing is a meaningful security upgrade over older windows. Every installation we fit includes:

-Multi-point locking on opening sashes

-Internally glazed beads so the glass can’t be removed from outside

-Toughened or laminated glass on ground floor and accessible openings

-Anti-snap, anti-bump euro cylinders on door installations

-PAS 24 compliance on request, the security standard required for new-builds under Document Q

added benefits

The Benefits at a Glance

-Lower heating bills, typically a 10 to 20% reduction over older windows or units with failed seals

-Less outside noise from traffic, neighbours, and weather

-Far less condensation on the inside of the glass

-Improved home security

-Better resale value, particularly important in a town like Stamford where buyers expect quality

-Low maintenance: uPVC and aluminium frames need little more than the occasional wipe

Common Issues We See in Older Homes

Most calls we get from across Stamford and Peterborough fall into a few categories:

-Misted or “blown” units where the seal has failed and moisture is trapped between the panes; see our guide to blown double glazing in Stamford

-Draughts around older uPVC frames where the rubber gaskets have perished

-Failed locking mechanisms on windows fitted in the 1990s and early 2000s

-Single-glazed timber windows in period properties where the owner wants to keep the character but improve thermal performance

-Condensation on the inside of glass in winter, a clear sign the glazing is no longer doing its job

If any of those sound familiar, replacement is almost always more cost-effective than repair once a unit has gone.
